Sharks in Aliwal Shoal

Aliwal Shoal is a world-renowned dive site located off the east coast of South Africa, near the small fishing village of Umkomaas. This fossilized sandbar, stretching almost 2 km, lies approximately 5 km offshore and has earned a reputation as one of the best shark diving locations globally. It was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2005, safeguarding its rich marine biodiversity.

A Dive for Every Level

Aliwal Shoal offers diving experiences for all skill levels, from open water beginners to experienced wreck divers. Among its top attractions are two fascinating shipwrecks:

  • The Produce (sunk in 1974) – A 119-meter-long wreck resting at 32 meters deep.

  • The Nebo (sunk in 1884) – A 19th-century vessel found at a depth of 26 meters.

Beyond wreck diving, Aliwal Shoal is best known for its spectacular shark encounters. The site’s dramatic underwater landscape, featuring caves, canyons, and striking rock formations, creates the perfect environment for thrilling marine interactions.

Shark Encounters at Aliwal Shoal

One of the biggest draws of Aliwal Shoal is its abundant shark population. Divers can expect encounters with various shark species, including:

  • Ragged-tooth sharks ("raggies") – From June to November, these docile but fearsome-looking sharks gather in large numbers to mate, with sightings of 15 to 150 in a single dive.

  • Tiger sharks – One of the world’s most feared apex predators, tiger sharks frequent these waters, particularly during the summer months.

  • Oceanic blacktip sharks – Commonly seen year-round, these agile hunters provide a mesmerizing sight.

  • Hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, dusky sharks, and even great white sharks – Though sightings are never guaranteed, these species are often spotted in the area.

The Thrill of a Baited Shark Dive

For adrenaline-seekers, Aliwal Shoal offers the unforgettable experience of a baited shark dive. This controlled yet exhilarating encounter takes place at a depth of 10 meters. A drum of bait is placed in the water while divers hover nearby, waiting for sharks to arrive.

Oceanic blacktips are seen throughout the year, while tiger sharks frequently make an appearance in the summer. This dive offers a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent predators up close—without the confines of a cage.

A Typical Day of Diving in Aliwal Shoal

Timing is crucial for the best dive experiences. The day begins early with a light breakfast at the dive center, followed by equipment preparation and a briefing. A short 5-minute drive takes divers to the boat launch area on the beach, where 8-meter semi-rigid boats await.

  • Launch & Entry: Every dive involves an exciting boat launch from the beach or river, adding an element of adventure right from the start.

  • Dive Site Access: The closest sites are just 15 minutes away, while the furthest take about 25 minutes.

  • Double Dives: After the first dive, divers return to shore for a surface interval of about 1 hour and 30 minutes before heading out again.

  • Drift Diving: All dives follow the natural ocean currents, as the boat is never anchored. Descents are made in open water using a buoy and the guide’s reel for reference.

  • Shark Snorkeling: During winter months (June to November), boat rides often include the chance to snorkel with migrating humpback whales.
