Scuba Diving in Mozambique

This is a scuba diving activity

“It was arriving on these beaches, exploring beneath the surface of the sea, and we fell in love immediately. Few places have we seen such quantity, such diversity, and the size of marine species!! More than a decade later, Praia do Tofo and Praia da Barra remain those rare, unspoiled destinations.”

Dive with whale sharks, reef and oceanic sharks, rays of various species and sizes, countless tropical and subtropical fish species, and during the winter months, humpback whales.

Swim with whale sharks, dive with reef and oceanic sharks, rays of various species and sizes, turtles, and an endless array of tropical and subtropical fish species. And one of our joys, during the winter months, guaranteed encounters with humpback whales.

We present here our Nhatofo Experience, an exclusive diving program we recommend to explore the marine depths of this special corner of Mozambique.

Where to Fly
We recommend flying into Inhambane, in Mozambique, where we will be waiting for you. There are direct flights from Maputo with the local airline LAM. Alternatively you could also fly via Johannesburg.

We are Robert and Lacin, your hosts, local diving guides, and field safari guides. We offer a variety of programs and itineraries, which we call “Experiences,” in Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland).

Since 2007, we have been operating here. Unlike other companies, we live in Mozambique, which makes us true experts in delivering authentic, high-quality experiences. Not only have we combined the best of the underwater and land worlds of the southeastern African coast, but we also introduce you to fascinating local cultures and a wide range of activities.

ROBERT

Our recommended standard Itinerary

Along the eastern coast of Africa, seasonal marine migrations shape life in the ocean, and Tofo sits right in the heart of this natural corridor. Throughout the year, our waters are alive with activity: reef dives rich in biomass, encounters with whale sharks and manta rays, and during the winter months, the arrival of migrating humpback whales moving along the coastline.

The Nhatofo Experience is our standard diving itinerary in Tofo, created to give you enough time in the water to truly connect with the place. A full week allows for multiple dive days, space to adapt to weather and ocean conditions, and time to enjoy Tofo beyond the dives themselves.

If a week of diving doesn’t feel like enough, additional days can easily be added. More time not only increases your chances of exceptional encounters, but also allows for rest days in between, making the overall experience more relaxed, immersive, and rewarding.

See below our Nhatofo Experience - Nhatofo is the Gitonga name for the area, the local language from Inhambane.

Day 1

Day 2 to day 6

SCUBA DIVING IN TOFO & BARRA

Each morning begins with a fresh breakfast at the accommodation before we head over to the activity centre, in Praia da Barra, for the day’s briefing. Once we are all kitted up we will walk you through the plan for the day, sea conditions, and what to look out for once we’re out on the boat.

Right after we will get down to the beach where we will be launching from to head out to sea and get ready for the day in search of humpback whales.

We schedule two morning dives daily for 5 days, with the option of a third dive in the afternoon or another activity.
There is also the possibility to swim with megafauna whenever it is safe and possible: humpback whales (from July to September), whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles...

After several hours at sea, we typically return to Tofo in the early afternoon. This is the time to unwind, take a hot shower, relax, or enjoy a quiet walk through the village before the evening sets in.

Snacks are provided on the boat to keep you fueled throughout the outing, and dinners are included at your accommodation, giving you a relaxed and easy end to each day.

Day 7

Relaxation day

Today is intentionally left open for you to enjoy at your own pace, whether that means unwinding and soaking up the serenity of Tofo or taking advantage of the many incredible experiences the Tofo and Barra area has to offer. This free day invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and relish the rhythm of coastal life, or to venture out and explore even more of this vibrant region.

For those looking to stay active, a wide variety of optional activities can be arranged: explore the Inhambane estuary in search of flamingos, snorkel with seahorses and other fascinating macro life, or head out on the water for kayaking, surfing, SUP, kitesurfing, or even a sailing excursion on a dhow or catamaran. If you feel like discovering the coastline from a different perspective, electric bicycles are available for guided or self-guided rides through local villages, across desert-like dunes with sweeping views of the ocean, or even to visit the Coconut Factory, an authentic glimpse into local life and culture. Quad biking, cultural tours, village visits, and relaxing massages are also available for those seeking either adventure or indulgence.

Lunch is not included, but we will happily guide you to one of Tofo’s charming local restaurants for a taste of authentic Mozambican flavors. If your heart is still set on the ocean, an additional day out at sea can be arranged depending on availability. And should a scheduled day on the water have been missed earlier in the trip, this is the ideal opportunity to make it up.

As the day draws to a close, you’ll return to the lodge for dinner, a relaxed and welcoming moment to share stories and highlights of the day.

Why Tofo as a diving destination?

Dive the coral reefs with your camera.JPG

Mozambique's east coast, with some 2,500 kilometres of largely unexplored coastline, offers underwater wilderness teeming with life. With its endless pristine beaches, Mozambique is an underwater oasis of East Africa, and Praia do Tofo is its capital, and for years has been gaining momentum in the diving world as a prime destination for megafauna viewing. Praia do Tofo's coastline is very undeveloped and unspoilt, and its waters offer wonderful biodiversity mainly due to the Agulhas current, allowing for some of the most spectacular diving in the world with sightings of Whale Sharks, Sharks of various species and Rays including Giant Mantas up to 7m in wingspan, Dolphins, various species of Turtles, and the majestic Humpback Whales that visit our waters between the months of June to November during their annual migration. This diversity of the great ones of the sea together with the variety of soft and hard corals that cover the local reefs have made this destination the jewel of the Indian Ocean.

While many of the best dive destinations suffer from dive sites full with boats and divers, with the resulting consequences on their reefs, Tofo retains its natural charm, allowing for the daily rediscovery of its beauty.

The southern coast of Mozambique, and in particular the province of Inhambane where Tofo is located, is home to
one of the most important feeding grounds for Whale Sharks and Manta Rays in the world
The highest sightings of the highly sought-after Whale Sharks are recorded in this area. Since 2005, more than 600 different individuals have been identified in these waters, some of them also sighted in South Africa and northern Tanzania, but studies show that these individuals return year after year to these food-rich waters. In 2021, the species finally received full legislative protection in Mozambique.

This area is also considered one of the centres of abundance of manta rays, the largest of the devil ray species (the genus Mobula). Over the last 20 years, the largest populations of giant and reef manta rays in Africa have been documented and identified. Both species aggregate in the south of the country, with the highest sightings recorded along the coast of Inhambane province.

This coast also provides important breeding, feeding and cleaning areas for devil rays (Mobula kuhlii), another endangered relative.
After many years of work, especially by the Marine Megafauna Foundation, in January 2021, the government has protected the manta and devil rays in Mozambique.

Tofo's seabed is made up of huge rocky bars that break the sandy bottom and rise to several metres, some of them colonised by gigantic coral structures that shelter countless marine species and attract a great diversity of pelagics.

If you have the time & the budget, we highly recommend you to top the above Experience with one of the following extensions!
